Source of fission fragments on californium-252 basis
Description
A method of fission fragments source manufacture by electrolytic application of californium-252 on titanium foil from isobutyl alcohol is described. Single deposition assures isolation of 90-95% californium on a surface 5 mm in diameter without the system cooling and forced mixing of the solution, which simplifies essentially the design of technical devices used. Uniform and strong enough layers have produced with well-reproducible results. Titanium foil 1.8 μm thick is employed as a substrate and protective coating of the source working surface. The product design protects reliability the environment from radioactive contamination. The coating and substrate decrease the maximum energy of fission fragments by 20-25%. 5 refs.; 2 figs
