Large magnetostriction and complex phase transition in UNiSn

Description

In high magnetic fields, magnetostriction in UNiSn is found to be remarkably enhanced with a sharp peak at a temperature TQ higher than the antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN. The pronounced volume reduction in magnetic fields below TQ suggests that the lattice deformation results from ferro-quadrupolar ordering of 5f-electron orbits. The competition between magnetic ordering and lattice instability is essential for the complex phase transition in UNiSn at 43 K. (orig.)
