Effect of oxygen on structure and properties of welded joints of low alloy molybdenum

Description
Oxygen effect on structure and ductility of welded joints of alloys on the base of molybdenum carried out by means of electric arc welding in the argon atmosphere is studied. Methods of chemical analysis, electron scannin microscopy, fracture photography and electron photography, and Auger electron spectroscopy are used in this investigation. It is shown that oxygen content in welded joint m tal of investigated molybdenum alloys governs their ductility. In welding oxygen practically completely passes from base metal to welded joint metal. Because of this, the removal of the sheet surface layer not less than 100 μm contaminated by oxygen is necessary to be conducted before welding. Effect of oxygen on welded joint ductility is probably accomplished through the formation of non-equilibrium segregations in boundary volumes
