Investigation of plasma waves by means of the BUDVAR combined wave diagnostics complexes (Prognoz-10-Interkosmos)

Description

Basic features of the technique of combined wave diagnostics by means of the BUDVAR complex are stated. Examples of measurements on near-Earth shock waves are given and the first results of physical interpretation of processes taking place in the front of near-Earth shock wave are presented. The detailed analysis of wave data for crossing by satellite of the shock wave front 11 May 1985 has shown that for the case of strong quasi-perpendicular shock wave the main mechanism leading to energy dissipation of directed flux of solar wind plasma is generation at frequencies substantially less than the low-hybrid resonance frequency of intensive magnetoacoustic oscillations. Because of considerable Doppler shift the observed oscillations frequency is several times highes and falls into the range of frequencies near to low-hybrid resonance. These oscillations are excited by the reflected ion beam
