Description
The structure of the USSR State Committee for Supervising Work Safety in the Nuclear Power Industry (USSR Gosatomenergonadzor) is outlined. Brief reports are given on recent activities. These include: a summary of unplanned shutdowns and infringements of safety regulations at nuclear power stations in May 1989; a visit to the USSR by a delegation from Britain's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate; examination of the feasibility study for the expansion of the Novovoronezhskaya nuclear power station; a meeting on openness (glasnost) in the nuclear power industry; an investigation of the construction of the Gor'kiy nuclear power station for supplying heat; a review of progress of work on full-scale simulators; the design of the third phase of the Beloyaskaya nuclear power station; checking the safety and readiness of unit 5 to be put into commission at the Zaporozh'ye nuclear power station.
