The spin structure of the nucleon measured in SLAC Experiment 155

Description

Experiment E155 measured the nucleon spin structure functions g1 and g2 using 48.3 and 38.8 GeV SLAC polarized beams incident on 15NH3 and 6LiD solid polarized targets. The 48 (39) GeV beam was used to measure parallel (perpendicular) asymmetries. The proton and deuteron data are combined to extract the neutron structure functions. The scattered electrons were detected in three spectrometers. The measurement of g1 has yielded the most precise data on the proton and deuteron to date. Results on the xB and Q2 dependence of the deuteron, proton and neutron structure functions are presented, including phenomenological and NLO pQCD fits to the world data on g1. The quark contribution to the nucleon spin has been extracted. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule is found to be fulfilled well within the experimental and theoretical errors. Inclusive hadron asymmetries were extracted as well and are compared with recent calculations
