Controlled potential coulometric determination of uranium and iron in the same aliquot using a Pt-gauze electrode

Description

A controlled potential coulometric method for the determination of uranium and iron using a Pt gauze electrode in 1M H2SO4 has been developed. U(VI) and Fe(III) are reduced chemically by Ti(III) and the excess Ti(III) is destroyed by 1M HNO3 at an applied potential of + 0.25V Vs SCE. U(IV) and Fe(II) are electrolytically oxidised at + 0.7V Vs SCE. Fe(III) is then selectively reduced at + 0.25 Vs SCE which gives directly the coulombs corresponding to iron. The difference in the coulombs obtained in the last two steps gives the coulombs due to uranium. Precision and accuracy obtained are ± 0.2 per cent for uranium ± 0.3 per cent for iron. (author)
