Description
YBa2Cu3Ox, SmBa2Cu3Ox, GdBa2Cu3Ox, and Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox superconductors were treated at 600 to 1100 K and 170 atm of pure oxygen to determine the effect of oxygen on the critical superconduction temperature, Tc. The preliminary results on 123-type (YBa2Cu3Ox) indicate increases in Tc while the Bi-types show decreases in Tc possibly due to the conversion of trivalent Bi into pentavalent Bi. In this paper it is shown that excess oxygen as O2 plays a dominant role in superconductivity. Other possible effects of oxygen are discussed in detail
