Space charge problems in final beam transport, bunching and focusing

Description
In the area of transport of high-current beams from the accelerator to the target the following problems have been considered important. (a) conditions for stable transport over long distance in quadrupole channels (b) final bunching during transport to the target of non-parabolic bunch shapes with longitudinal-transverse coupling (c) design of final focusing systems in the presence of space charge. Here we present the results of computational work on these topics, which was performed in the context of the HIBALL accelerator scenario. The examples presented primarily deal with enhanced space charge effects due to doubly charged ions, as assumed in the first version of HIBALL. An important conclusion of this work is that space charge effects in final transport and focusing are now rather well-understood and have not become a matter of concern. (orig./HSI)
