Study and application of the ANISN and DOT 3.5 codes to problems in nuclear radiation shielding

The application of the Sn transport codes ANISN and DOT 3.5 to problems in radiation shielding is reviewed. In addition, a large array of codes involved in radiation shielding calculations is described and applied in this work. The ANISN and DOT 3.5 codes solve the multigroup transport equation in plane, cylindrical and spherical geometries, the first in one dimension and the second in two dimensions, by using the Sn approximation and were designed to solve coupled neutron-photon transport problems commonly found in reactor shielding calculations. In this work the numerical methods used in these codes are reviewed and their basic application to deep-penetration and void problems is discussed. Benchmark problems are solved by employing the array of codes previously mentioned. In particular, the ability of the ISOFLUXO program coupled to the DOT 3.5 code of mapping contours of regions with approximately the same scalar fluxes is illustrated, showing that they can be efficiently used in shielding analysis. Revisa-se a aplicacao dos codigos nucleares de transporte Sn, ANISN e DOT 3.5, a problemas de blindagem de radiacoes; alem disso, descreve e aplica uma vasta rede de codigos nucleares envolvidos em calculos de blindagem de radiacoes nucleares. Os codigos ANISN e DOT 3.5 solucionam a equacao de transporte multigrupo em geometria plana, cilindrica e esferica, o primeiro em uma dimensao e o segundo em duas dimensoes, atraves da aproximacao Sn, tendo sido projetados para solucionar problemas de transporte acoplados de neutrons e fotons que e a situacao normal em calculos de blindagem de reatores nucleares. Neste trabalho o metodo numerico usado nestes codigos e revisto e as caracteristicas basicas da aplicacao destes a problemas de penetracao profunda e em vazios sao discutidas. Problemas padrao sao solucionados, atraves de uma vasta rede de codigos nucleares e em particular ilustra-se a capacidade do programa ISOFLUXO, acoplado ao DOT 3.5 de mapear contornos de regioes com fluxos escalares iguais, provando que este acoplamento pode ser eficientemente utilisado em analise de blindagem.
