Description
Different α-rich Si3N4-Powders and α/β-Si3N4 powder mixtures containing 10 Vol% sintering additives (Y2O3/Al2O3) were sintered at temperatures between 1750 C and 1950 C. The three dimensional particle size-shape distributions were determined by quantitative microstructural analysis and a subsequent stereological calculation. The results reveal that the microstructure development depends upon the β-particle size distribution and the β-Si3N4 nuclei density in the starting powder. Fracture toughness of the sintered materials varies from 6,7 MPa.m1/2 to 10,3 MPa.m1/2. A quantitative relationship among fracture toughness, volume fraction and diameter of the elongated grains with aspect ratios > 4 is discussed. (orig.)
