Description
The clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 is a cage compound with magnetic guest atom Eu. The RKKY interaction between Eu2+ moments leads to the ferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures. The most interesting properties of the compound are associated with the off-center fourfold split sites of Eu atoms. The appropriate four-well potential leads to the four-level tunneling states (FLS). The influence of FLS on the thermal conductivity is studied and the experimental situation considered. Direct evidence for the FLS is obtained from the anomalous elastic properties
