Environmental risk assessment for transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level wastes: Methodology and database

Description

This paper discusses a methodology and database for the assessment of environmental risks resulting from transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. Discussion covers two situations: normal transportation operations and accident conditions. The methodology described includes the identification of the environmental pathways leading to radioactive exposure of humans and the health risks incurred. Databases include those for the radioactivity inventory, traffic accidents, population distribution, agricultural productivity, and meteorological data. Special situations are discussed for which regional considerations are needed for the risk assessment. 11 refs
