Use of the Surface Harmonics Method for Evaluation of Homogenization Effect for PWR-Type Lattices with MOX Fuel

  • 1. Nuclear Reactor Institute, Russian Research Center 'Kurchatov Institute', Moscow (Russian Federation)

Description

Use of the Surface Harmonics Method (SHM) for calculations of PWR-type lattices with MOX fuel has been presented. Two types of calculations were performed. The first type uses the procedure of cell homogenization and the second one does not use this procedure. Comparisons were carried out between different SHM calculations, and on this basis it was shown that the effect of elementary cell homogenization at calculation of fuel assemblies reaches about 0.5% in Keff, up to 7.4% in local absorption and up to 3.1% in local energy release. Additionally, the SHM results were compared with results obtained with other codes, realizing both diffusion and Monte Carlo approaches. (author)
