Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs): enabling fleet-scale SMR deployment in remote regions

  • 1. Prodigy Clean Energy, Boston, Massachusetts (United States)

Description

Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs) developed by Prodigy Clean Energy are a key enabling technology that will help to reduce the costs of SMR projects and expand opportunities for SMR deployment, particularly in off-grid and difficult to access remote regions. Factory-manufactured and transported to site, Prodigy's TNPP systems offer utilities and end-users flexibility to choose the type and size of SMR integrated, as well as configuration options for land- or marine-based (shoreside) siting. At the end-of-life, the TNPP would be removed from site along with any hazardous and radiological wastes produced, enabling both centralized decommissioning waste management and faster site recovery. When compared to a site-constructed SMR project, utilization of a TNPP will offer significant benefits across the entire power plant life cycle. Prodigy is working with a strong team of Indigenous and industry stakeholders to deploy a First-of-a-Fleet TNPP in Canada by early 2030s or sooner. (author)
