Direct uranium logging using X-ray fluorescence technique

Description

A borehole probe based on the X-ray fluorescence technique and optimized for Uranium logging has been developed at Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The demonstration of this technique has been carried out in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Canada in Sept/Oct 1981 in Canada. Continuous logging with a velocity of 30cm/min and sampling time of 20s could be used. A high space resolution (better than 2cm) along the borehole was possible with step-by-step measurements. The simultaneous determination of Uranium and Thorium was also demonstrated. A satisfactory agreement between core assay and the results processed in situ has been obtained. The influence of natural radioactivity on the XRF log has found to be negligible
