Some D.C. effects in an R.F. discharge
Description
In an experiment on ion cyclotron resonance heating of a plasma R.F. energy was coupled into the plasma via concentric electrodes. Periodic variations in the envelope of the wave magnetic field as detected by bsub(THETA) probes are interpreted in terms of filamentary R.F. discharges extending from the central electrode to the wall and rotating about the axis of the vessel. Assuming this rotation to be due to J x B forces, a theory is presented explaining the observed phenomena in terms of partial rectification of the applied R.F. occurring at the electrodes. (author)
