Description
The programme for energy research in the UK is discussed. The criteria by which any particular technology must be judged are stated. The principal energy sources - coal, oil, nuclear power - and other possible sources - winds, waves, tides, solar radiation and geothermal energy - are reviewed briefly. Particular attention is given to nuclear power with a discussion of thermal reactors and fast reactors, radioactive waste management, and fusion research. Other topics considered briefly are: distribution technologies, combined heat and power, and energy conservation. (U.K.)
