Neutron scattering lengths and fundamental neutron interactions

In the last three decades neutrons, mainly slow neutrons with velocities ranging between 100 and some 1000 m/s, have become an important and unique tool in both nuclear and solid state physics. In all cases, the main process is the scatttering of slow neutrons, which will be described by various scattering cross sections given in terms of a basic nuclear constant. This basic quantity is the neutron scattering length b. In this review I shall first give a brief outline of the basic quantities and of small, but necessary corrections due to second-order effects. Then I shall deal with the experimental methods for the determination of scattering lengths and cross sections, in particular with the new high-precision techniques. I shall report on the employment of the new instruments and methods for the investigations of elementary neutron interactions. In addition, a compilation of the most recent values for the neutron-scattering parameters of the elements is given for the use in pure and applied neutron physics. (orig.)

In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten wurden Neutronen, vor allem langsame Neutronen mit Geschwindigkeiten zwischen 100 und 1000 m/s, zu einem wichtigen und einmaligen Werkzeug der Kern- und Festkoerperphysik. In allen Faellen ist der wesentliche Prozess gegeben durch die Streuung langsamer Neutronen, die durch verschiedene Streuwirkungsquerschnitte beschrieben werden kann. Diese Wirkungsquerschnitte lassen sich durch eine grundlegende Kerneigenschaft, die Streulaenge, ausdruecken. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird zuerst ein kurzer Ueberblick der grundlegenden Groessen und kleiner, jedoch notwendiger Korrekturen aufgrund von Effekten zweiter Ordnung gegeben. Anschliessend werden experimentelle Methoden zur Bestimmung von Streulaengen und Wirkungsquerschnitten unter besonderer Beruecksichtigung der neuen Praezisionstechniken beschrieben. Schliesslich wird auf die Anwendung der neuen Instrumente und Methoden zur Untersuchung elementarer Neutron-Wechselwirkungen eingegangen. Fuer die Anwendung in der reinen und angewandten Neutronenphysik wird ausserdem eine Liste der neuesten Neutronenstreuparameter aller Elemente angegeben. (orig.)Additional details
