Production of cold-rolled stainless steel sheets for tower internals of heavy water plant

  • 1. Steel Authority of India Ltd., Salem

Description

The bulk of the heavy water required for nuclear reactors is produced by hydrogen sulphide and water dual temperature chemical exchange process. The reaction towers used in this process are provided with tower internals for facilitating exchange reactions. For satisfactory performance in this highly corrosive media, tower internals are fabricated from austenitic stainless steel sheets in AISI 304L and 316L grades due to their excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and formability. Experience relating to development and industrial production of cold rolled austenitic stainless steel sheets in AISI 304L and 316L grades, as material of construction for tower internals of a heavy water plant in India, is briefly discussed.
