Interaction of an Electron Beam with a Fast Magnetoacoustic Wave

Description
The authors investigate experimentally the interaction of an electron beam with a fast magnetoacoustic wave excited in a plasma by external, spatially periodic currents of high frequency (f = 1.03 x 107 c/s). It is shown that when the condition ω-kz v0 + ωHe = 0 is fulfilled there is an effective interaction between the electron beam and the wave, which manifests itself as a sharp increase in the gas-kinetic pressure of the plasma and in X-ray emission and as a decrease in the high-energy electron current at the outlet of the system. It is shown that, as they acquire high perpendicular energies, about 30% of the electrons in the beam are held in the magnetic trap. The effective interaction between the electron beam and the wave lasts for about 7.5 μs and is followed by saturation of the diamagnetic signal; under certain circumstances strong u. h. f. emission from the plasma is observed, its frequency coinciding with the plasma electron frequency. From investigations of this emission it may be assumed that it is caused by a non-linear interaction of longitudinal Langmuir oscillations with the fast magnetoacoustic wave. (author)

Provedeno jeksperimental'noe issledovanie vzaimodejstvija jelektronnogo puchka s bystroj magnitozvukovoj volnoj, kotoraja vozbuzhdalas' v plazme s pomoshh'ju vneshnih prostranstvenno-periodicheskih tokov vysokoj chastoty (f = 1.03 x 107 c/s). Pokazano, chto pri sobljudenii uslovija ω-kz v0 + ωHe = 0 proishodit jeffektivnoe vzaimodejstvie jelektronnogo puchka s volnoj, chto vyrazhaetsja v rezkom uvelichenii gazokineticheskogo davlenija plazmy, rentgenovskogo izluchenija i umen'shenii toka jenergichnyh jelektronov na vyhode sistemy . Pokazano, chto okolo 30% jelektronov puchka, priobretaja bol'shie perpendikuljarnye jenergii, zahvatyvaetsja v magnitnoj lovushke. Jeffektivnoe vzaimodejstvie jelektronnogo puchka s volnoj proishodit v techenie ∼7,5 mksek, a zatem nastupaet nasyshhenie diamagnitnogo signala. Pri jetom iz plazmy v opredelennyh uslovijah nabljudaetsja sil'noe svchizluchenie, chastota kotorogo sovpadaet s plazmennoj jelektronnoj chastotoj. Provedennoe issledovanie jetogo izluchenija pozvoljaet predpolozhit', chto ono obuslovleno nelinejnym vzaimodejstviem prodol'nyh lengmjurovskih kolebanij s bystroj magnitozvukovoj volnoj.
