Planar contributions to axial flux peaks in nitrogen implanted single crystal stainless steel

Description

Our earlier studies of the lattice location of nitrogen implanted into single crystal stainless steel showed a strong flux peaking effect along the [110] and [211] directions of the lattice. The nuclear reaction 15N(p, α)12C at 800 keV was used in combination with channeling to identify this octahedral interstitial position of the nitrogen. However, the fwhm of the flux peaks, measured to be 1.40, was equal to the fwhm of the RBS angular scans of the axes, instead of being considerably smaller as expected from theoretical considerations. Recent, more detailed measurements now show the broad peak to be due to contributions from the [111] planes - along which nitrogen is visible - to the edges of the axial [110] flux peak. (orig.)
