Case report 462: Grade 2 myxoid fibrosarcoma of femur

A 49-year-old man had a large, aggressive, lytic lesion at the distal end of the femur, which was a grade 2 myxoid fibrosarcoma of bone. Distinction between fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma was considered. It was indicated that the myxoid element in a fibrosarcoma may be of significance in the prognosis. It has been demonstrated that cases of fibrosarcoma with a predominance of myxoid stroma may result in an erroneous diagnosis of low-grade chrondosarcoma. In addition, those patients with lesions that have a relatively small amount of myxoid areas in fibrous tissue lesions have a significantly higher survival rate than those with myxomatous areas that are predominant in the microscopic studies.
