Description

Located at the junction of Himalayan and Burmese arc, Mizoram is one of the most prominent regions of earthquake and was at zone five. Response of soil probe (5cm) and a radon exhalation chamber (accumulator) to radon concentration variation were compared for approximately three month from 5th January to 26th march 2017, at Mizoram University (N23° 43'58.94'',E92° 39'24.25'') by ZnS (Ag) type scintillation counter. Both the probe and accumulator chamber respond quite well to radon concentration variation, with a better (sharper) peak in accumulator chamber in this winter season. The radon concentration of the measuring site and the fault were compared by mass exhalation at both the sites. The variation of radon counts were analysed and used as a precursor to earthquake.
