Interstitial radiotherapy with I-125 seeds for intracapsular prostatic cancer

Description
The authors present 31 patients with prostatic cancer treated by intersitial radiotherapy with I-125 seeds. Neoplastic stage and grade must be respectively T2NOMO and G3 according to Gleason's classification. Staging and clinical evaluation were based on the following: IVP, voiding cystogram, prostatic transrectal suprapubic ultrasound, isotope bone scan, pelvi-abdominal CT scan, chest X-rays, cystourethroscopic evaluation and blood tumor markers (alk., ac. and prostatic phosphatases). Radioactive I-125 seeds are now inserted by means of the Mick's set. The number of seeds, depending on the activity and the volume of the prostrate, is calculated according to Anderson's nomogram. I-125 half-life (60,2 days) induces prolonged therapeutic effects, but at the same time concentrated over the first two months, during which time the patient receives about one half of the total first year dose (10-12,000 rads)
