The medical accelerator HIMAC and the charged particle therapy in Japan

Description

In recent years, the clinical trial of the charged particle therapy has been carried out in Japan. Several new high-energy accelerators are dedicated for this medical request. The heavy ion medical accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) is one of these accelerators, and has been realizing the heavy-ion cancer treatment for five years by the irradiation of the relativistic carbon beam. Over 600 patients have been treated and the preliminary results looks quite promising. Other new facilities are also under commissioning or construction. (author)
