Description of a simultaneous measurement of length and resistivity under irradiation at low temperature

Description
The use of a linear differential variable transformer (L. D. V. T.) in an in-pile irradiation capsule makes it possible to measure length variations in flux. The conditions of use together with the calibration of the transformers are described. The maximum length change is (2±1) mm; the sensitivity is 0.1 μ. Resistivity changes are simultaneously measured. The capsule allows either in-flux measurements or post irradiation anneals from 4 to 400 K. Some results obtained on uranium wires are presented as examples. (authors)
Abstract (French)
L'utilisation d'un transformateur lineaire variable, differentiel (T. L. V. D. ou capteur), incorpore dans une capsule d'irradiation en pile, permet d'effectuer des mesures de variation de longueur d'echantillons sous flux. On decrit les conditions d'utilisation; ainsi que l'etalonnage de ces capteurs. L'allongement (ou la contraction) maximal permis est de 2 mm (± 1 mm), la sensibilite de 0,1 micron. Simultanement aux variations de longueur on peut mesurer la resistivite electrique a 2 10-4 pres, par la methode des quatre fils. La temperature d'utilisation de la capsule et de ses composants, est comprise entre 4 deg. K et 400 deg. K. Le dispositif permet egalement d'effectuer des recuits apres irradiation, jusqu'a des temperatures d'environ 400 deg. K. Des resultats obtenus, sur un fil d'uranium, sont presentes a titre d'exemple.
