The application of superconducting RF cavities to electron storage rings

Creators

Description

The interaction between superconducting RF cavities and the beam in an electron storage ring is examined for the fundamental and higher longitudinal modes. It is shown that by suitable choice of operating conditions, neither an active tuner nor a variable coupling is required. By suitable 'dimpling' energy loss into resonant higher modes can be completely avoided. The average effect of many cavities on the beam should not be worse than that of room-temperature cavities.
