Description

To ensure that no damage to a HDMM results from a quench, the quench performance of the HDMM DSB701 in the short magnet quench protection circuit is modeled. If the temperature rise is excessive, damage to the Kapton insulation could occur, above 500 K, or the superconducting critical current could degrade, above 850 K. The magnet current, coil hot spot temperature, and magnet resistance assuming adiabatic quench propagation velocities are calculated as a function of time. Voltages developed within the circuit during a quench are also estimated. The fraction of the stored energy deposited in the coil and in the dump resistor is calculated, which determines the amount of LHe vaporized during a quench
