From Kolar gold fields to India based Neutrino Observatory

Description

One of the outcomes of a vibrant cosmic ray research program started by Bhabha was the discovery of atmospheric neutrinos in 1965 by a TIFR-Osaka-Durham collaboration. The experiments were performed at the Kolar Gold Fields at a depth of about 2.3 km. These were followed by the first searches at KGF for proton decay. After the closing of the KGF mines an effort to revive neutrino research resulted in the proposal to set up the India based Neutrino Observatory (INO) at Pottipuram in Tamil Nadu. A brief update on the status of the INO project will be given. (author)
