Highlights: • The oxidation behavior of columnar WN ceramic coating during heat treatment was first studied. • The oxidation behavior of columnar WCN ceramic coating during heat treatment was first studied. • The oxidation resistance of columnar WN coating was improved by doping carbon. • The mechanisms of the oxidation resistance were discussed systematically.
