  • 1. RAMN, Obninsk (Russian Federation). Meditsinskij Radiologicheskij Nauchnyj Tsentr

Description

To assess the incidence in latent thyroid cancer after the Chernobyl accident and determine the contribution of radioactive contamination to its development the histologic examination of the thyroid samples obtained at autopsies and forensic medical autopsies of 107 subjects (87 men and 20 women) dead for various causes at the age off 9 to 76 years was carried ut. Twenty of these were residents of contaminated and 87 of noncontaminated regions of the Kaluga district of Russia. No differences in the structure of the thyroid and in the incidence of latent tumors and nontumor formations of the thyroid were revealed in subjects living in contaminated and noncontaminated regions. The tumors were classified as papillary microcarcinomas of papillary, mixed, and follicular structure. Comparative analysis of the incidence of latent thyroid cancer in contaminated and noncontaminated regions in remote periods after the Chernobyl accident may help precisely assess the contribution of the radiation factor to its development. 14 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs
