Description
Weak interactions are described in terms of gauge theories, which necessitates the existence of a new type of particle that can best be described as a 'heavy photon'. Experiments are described which are now being prepared with the hope of demonstrating the existence of these particles within the next ten years. Their mass can be predicted precisely. If they are found to exist, one can then study the properties of this new form of material. (C.F.)
