The Severe Accident Mitigation Concept of Arena NPPs EPRTM Reactor
Description
All AREVA NP Gen-3 reactors, the EPRTM and ATMEA1TM PWR, as well as KERENA BWR, give extended consideration to the prevention of severe accidents. Despite the so-achieved very low core melt frequencies, additional 'beyond-safety' measures are implemented in these designs. They are aimed at drastically reducing the environmental impact of a severe accident (SA), should it nevertheless occur, as well as at eliminating the need for emergency evacuations of the surrounding population and long-term restrictions with respect to the consumption of LOCAy grown food. The adopted safety concepts meet advanced regulatory requirements, incl. IAEA safety guide, Technical Guidelines (GPR/German experts), and SECY 93-087 (NRC). The chosen SA concept is illustrated at the example of the EPRTM plant which is currently under construction in Finland, France and China
