Environmental change after Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident and progress in radio-analytical techniques. Behaviors of radioactive materials in the aerosols

The behaviors of radioactive materials emitted and diffused into the atmosphere were studied on the basis of the results of radioactivity measurements of the aerosol particles collected before and after the occurrence of the reactor accident and at the Hiratsuka City located about 260 km southeast of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station. Aerosol particles collected were first classified according to the particle size as TSP (total suspended particles), SPM (suspended particle matter), PM 2.5 (particulate matter 2.5), and UFPs (ultrafine particulates). Detailed techniques of particulate sampling and analysis procedure are given. Particle size distribution is presented for radioactive telluride, iodide and cesium particles from the results of which their behaviors in the atmosphere are considered. (S. Ohno)
