A uniqueness result for quantum field theory on spacetimes with bifurcate killing horizons

The author describes rigorous mathematical theorem he had recently proven, which throws some new light on some old issues in quantum-field-theory-in-curved-spacetime connected with the Hawking effect. He gives a brief and, in places, informal statement of this theorem and discusses its significance in a qualitative way
