  • 1. US Embassy, Vienna (Austria)

Description

Heading into the next century, issues surrounding the world' sustainable development present a formidable challenge for energy producers. What role will nuclear energy play to help more electricity needs and curb the threat of climate change? A reasonable prediction is that worldwide energy consumption will increase 50% by the year 2020, and could double by mid-century. The greenhouse effect itself is beyond dispute. The challenges for the next century concerning power production and nuclear power plants development and utilisation are discussed in related to climate changes, question of non-proliferation, IAEA safeguards, safety of nuclear power plants, waste management and storage. These led to conclusion that, today, mankind faces needs, and perils, demanding exploitation of constructive power of nuclear energy and fulfill the vision of 'Atoms for peace'
