Dismantling of the main ring magnet power supply for proton accelerators

  • 1. High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), Accelerator Laboratory (ACCL), Tsukuba, Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

The main ring magnet power supply for the proton accelerator began construction in 1974 and started operation in 1975. In 2012, 38 years later, it was completely dismantled, including the building, to make way for the construction of a cooling water machinery building for SKEKB. The equipment contained trace amounts of PCBs and asbestos, and asbestos was also used in the building itself, due to the era of construction. Other PS facilities were constructed around the same time. This was one of the first large-scale dismantling projects for an accelerator facility. The dismantling details are presented in as much detail as possible to serve as a reference for future dismantling of PS equipment. (J.P.N.)
