SIA 'radon' experience in radioactive, waste vitrification

  • 1. Moscow Scientific and Industrial Association, Moscow (Russian Federation)

Description

Vitrification of radioactive waste is considered as one of the best methods for their safe storage and disposal. Initially, vitrification of high level waste (HLW) was suggested. There was a negative attitude toward vitrification of low and intermediate level wastes(LILW) in Russia for many years mainly from economic point of view. In spite of this, such works were started in SIA 'Radon' and Radon has experience in LILW vitrification for almost twenty years up to date. Borosilicate rather than alumino phosphate glasses are used for immobilization of radionuclides and other waste constituents. These work were started from development and testing of small-scale laboratory units and the construction of pilot plants. At the present time a full-scale vitrification plant based on a cold crucible melter is under testing. The destination of this plant is liquid LILW treatment. Experimental plant for solid wastes melting/vitrification is under construction. Moreover, the work in the field of HLW vitrification (using simulated waste) and incorporation in System is also carried out
