Description

The main aim of this chapter is to discuss the magnetic properties of quiescent prominences. It treats the formation of quiescent prominences by thermal instability and their overall magnetohydrostatics, as well as the theory of coronal transients, which accompany prominence eruptions. A distinction will be made here between the two possible locations for prominences, namely magnetic arcades and current sheets. Also, it is only the overall structure of a prominence that will be considered, since the detailed fine structure and associated downflow does not yet seem to be understood. (Auth.)
