Process to manufacture nuclear fuel pellets

Description

The reduction of the superstoichiometric compacts of UO2/PuO2 powder mixtures takes place at about 10000C and the addition of the gas mixture N2/H2 or N2/CO takes place in a muffle furnace. The subsequent sintering is performed in a sinter furnace decoupled from the muffle furnace at temperatures between 1000 and 17600C. The gas mixture H2/Ar is added here. The length and pusher rate of the sinter furnace can be optimally selected due to the decoupling of both furnaces. (DG)

Abstract (German)

Die Reduktion der ueberstoechiometrischen Presskoerper aus UO2/PuO2-Pulvergemischen erfolgt bei etwa 10000C und Zufuhr des Gasgemisches N2/H2 oder N2/CO in einem Muffelofen. Das anschliessend durchzufuehrende Sintern erfolgt in einem vom Muffelofen entkoppelten Sinterofen bei Temperaturen zwischen 1000 und 17600C. Hierbei wird das Gasgemisch H2/Ar zugefuehrt. Durch die Entkopplung beider Oefen kann die Laenge und die Durchstossgeschwindigkeit des Sinterofen optimal ausgewaehlt werden. (DG)
