Study of transverse mixing in non uniform open channel flow

Description

Estimating the transverse mixing in rivers is essential for a better estimation of pollutant dispersion, and the determination of concentration levels in order to anticipate sanitary risks. It is usually estimated using a simple model that supposes uniform flow conditions in the main flow direction (constant flow velocity and depth along the direction of the flow), and introduces a 'transverse mixing' coefficient that quantifies transverse mixing efficiency. River studies usually assume uniformity, and report values of the coefficient much higher than in laboratory studies for which the uniformity condition is verified, without explanation. The work presented here aims at verifying if the flow longitudinal non-uniformity (accelerated or decelerated), often observed in rivers and not studied in laboratory, can increase the transverse mixing. In situ tracing experiments are undertaken in the Durance river, a piedmont river that exhibits a strong longitudinally non uniform flow. A first field experiment reveals the increase of the transverse mixing coefficient as the non-uniformity parameter increases. A new equation including the flow non-uniformity parameter fits our experimental data with high accuracy, and explains the high values of the transverse mixing coefficient in rivers. A second field experiment focuses on the difficulties of properly estimating the characteristic quantities of the mean flow and its impacts on the measured value of the transverse mixing coefficient. Finally, in situ tracing experiments in a straight laboratory channel with controlled conditions confirms the increase of the transverse mixing efficiency in an accelerated flow compared to a uniform flow. Further experimentations are required in order to understand the physical mechanism responsible for this increase in a non uniform flow, and to determine a more general empirical law for predicting the value of the transverse mixing coefficient in a river. Abstract (French)

Ce travail de these s'inscrit dans une problematique de modelisation et gestion des rejets en riviere, et plus particulierement sur la facon dont les rejets se melangent au sein d'une section perpendiculaire a l'ecoulement. La prediction de ce melange est essentielle pour estimer les niveaux de concentration a l'aval des rejets et anticiper les impacts sanitaires et environnementaux. Elle se fait habituellement a l'aide d'un modele simplifie qui suppose un ecoulement uniforme longitudinalement (vitesse et profondeur constantes le long du cours d'eau), et introduit un coefficient dit 'de melange transverse', qui quantifie l'efficacite du melange. Les etudes en riviere supposent l'uniformite longitudinale de l'ecoulement, et rapportent des valeurs de ce coefficient souvent bien superieures a celles en laboratoire pour lesquelles l'uniformite longitudinale de l'ecoulement est verifiee, et ce, sans explication plausible. L'objectif de cette these est de verifier si le melange transverse en riviere est accentue par un ecoulement non-uniforme (accelere ou decelere) souvent observe sur le terrain, et non etudie en laboratoire. Pour repondre a cet objectif, des experiences de tracages in-situ ont eu lieu dans la Durance, une riviere de piemont presentant des ecoulements non-uniformes longitudinalement. Une premiere campagne de mesure en riviere met en evidence une augmentation du coefficient de melange transverse avec l'augmentation du parametre de non-uniformite longitudinale de l'ecoulement, aboutissant a une loi empirique permettant de predire et d'expliquer les fortes valeurs du coefficient en rivieres. Une deuxieme campagne montre ensuite la forte influence de la resolution spatiale des mesures utilisees pour moyenner les parametres hydrauliques du modele simplifie, ainsi que le parametre de non-uniformite. Enfin, une etude en conditions controlees de laboratoire, produisant des ecoulement acceleres, confirme l'augmentation du coefficient de melange transverse par rapport a un ecoulement uniforme. Des experimentations plus poussees restent cependant requises afin de comprendre les mecanismes associes a l'augmentation de l'efficacite du melange en ecoulement non uniforme, ainsi que pour etablir une loi operationnelle permettant de predire le coefficient de melange transverse dans une de riviere de piemont
