X-ray imaging: supernova remnants
Description
The Einstein Observatory has provided astronomers with the first opportunity to obtain optical quality images of extended X-ray sources. Such pictures of supernova remnants, for example, yield a wealth of information on the dynamics and evolution of the expanding blast wave, the possible collapsed remnants of the exploded star, and the structure of the interstellar medium. The author reviews imaging observation of over 50 supernova remnants obtained during the first year of the Observatory's operation. Although analysis of these results is still in its infancy, it is already possible to draw important conclusions regarding models for stellar explosions, remnant evolution, neutron star formation, and the interstellar medium.
