Application of the Bowring correlation for calculating the critical heat flux

Description

The evaluation of the critical heat flux is of great importance for the nuclear reactor project, because it permits the verification of the safety margin with respect to fuel rod damage. This work presents a comparison of the original critical heat flux correlation proposed by Bowring with an alternative form derived from it presented in several papers. Very different results have been encountered from the application of the two correlation forms. Therefore, a criterious choice of the correlation form must be done avoid the violation of the project's safety margin. (Author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

A avaliacao do fluxo de calor critico e de extrema importancia no projeto de um reator nuclear, pois o mesmo permite verificar a margem de seguranca do projeto relativamente aos danos nas varetas combustiveis. Este trabalho compara a correlacao proposta originalmente por Bowring para o calculo do fluxo de calor critico e a sua forma alternativa comumente encontrada na literatura. Dependendo da correlacao empregada, valores significativamente diferentes sao encontrados e desse modo, uma escolha criteriosa deve ser feita para evitar que a margem de seguranca do projeto seja violada.
