Improvement of gadolinia fuel cycle economics by isotopic enrichment of 157Gd
Description
Burnable absorbers are used in fuel cycle design for controlling excess reactivity and core power distributions. Gadolinia (Gd2O3) has been used for a number of years in both boiling water and pressurized water reactor fuel as a burnable absorber. However, gadolinia exhibits significant end-of-cycle (EOC) residual absorption that translates to an economic penalty. This paper presents the concept of using gadolinia enriched in the 157Gd isotope to reduce this residual and thereby improve the economics of gadolinia fuel cycles
