Pre-operative staging of bronchial carcinomas

Description
Pre-operative staging was carried out in 52 out of 112 patients suspected of having bronchial carcinomas, using computed tomography and conventional radiology. CT was superior in demonstrating tumour infiltration of the mediastinum, of the thoracic wall and of metastases in mediastinal lymph nodes. Conventional radiology was better for demonstrating intrabronchial tumour and metastases of bronchiopulmonary lymph nodes. By extending CT to the upper abdomen, it was possible to show metastases in 18% of patients. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Ein praeoperatives Staging wurde bei 52 von 112 untersuchten Patienten mit Verdacht auf Bronchialkarzinom computertomographisch und konventionell radiologisch durchgefuehrt. Beim Vergleich beider Methoden ergab sich eine Ueberlegenheit der CT beim Nachweis einer Tumorinfiltration in Strukturen des Mediastinums und der Thoraxwand sowie von metastatisch befallenen mediastinalen Lymphknoten. Die konventionelle Radiologie zeigte Vorteile bei der Darstellung des intrabronchialen Tumorwachstums und der bronchopulmonalen Lymphknotenmetastasen. Durch Erweiterung der CT-Untersuchung auf den Oberbauch konnten hier bei 18% (n = 87) der Patienten Metastasen nachgewiesen werden. (orig.)Additional details
