Track length-range relationship for heavy ions in solid state track detectors (SSTD)

Description

In a previous article, the track length of some heavy ions was experimentally determined in poly carbonate (Pc), cellulose nitrate (CN) and cellulose acetate (CA) taking into account the surface and over etching corrections. In this article, in addition to the above mentioned corrections, the refractive index of the target material is also considered. On this basis, the track length oh highly accelerated particles Ne-20, Si-28, S-32 and Ar-40 is determined. The newly added correction introduces a significant improvement to the numerical value of the track length and proved to be of practical value in the experimental track identification. It is also noticed that the experimentally determined track length is in better agreement with the previous experimental and theoretical range values. The ratio between track length and range is constant for different incident energies for the same projectile and detector. This ratio was found to exceed 90% and increases as Z of the ion increases.4 fig.,2 tab
