High beta plasma confinement in reversed field pinch (ETL TPE-1)

  • 1. Electrotechnical Lab., Tanashi, Tokyo (Japan). Tanashi Branch

Description

ETL TPE-1 is an experimental apparatus for the confinement of high-beta toroidal plasma produced by the fast magnetic field compression technique in an axisymmetric magnetic system. The main experimental results of equilibrium and stability in a screw pinch configuration in the plasma temperature range > 100 eV are: in the low q region it was very hard to confine the stable equilibrium plasma due to MHD kink instabilities; in the high q region, stable plasma in the so-called high-beta tokamak configuration was confined for longer, approximately 40-50 μs, with β approximately 3%.
