Mammography: increased false positive rates as a result of examining low risk populations
Description
The authors are familiar with the controversy regarding the relative risk of late detection of breast cancer versus the risk resulting from X-ray exposure, but do not feel qualified to take a position on the matter. Thus, this paper should not be interpreted as a position in favor or against screening indicated populations for breast cancer through the use of mammography. Dedicated diagnostic radiologists, trained in mammography, are often aware of the sensitivity and specificity being delivered by their program, as well as the false positive rates stemming from indicated biopsies. It is hoped that this paper can provide a tool for the continued assessment of these variables at most facilities where mammography is being provided.
