Scintillator and apparatus using a scintillator for the detection of penetrating radiation

Description
The scintillator contains a scintillation crystal and a detector for the scintillations in the crystal produced by X-ray or γ-irradiation. The crystal consists of an alkali halogenide doped with thallium such as sodium iodide or cesium iodide. The thallium is for the improvement of the effectiveness of the crystal for the wave conversion in the visible spectrum. The thallium content of the crystal is kept between 25 and 200 ppm of the alkali halogenide to reduce the share of simultaneously occuring and interfering phosphorescence. The scintillator can be used in X-ray diagnostics equipment in which cross-section planes of patients are registered. The detector can be placed in various positions to the patient. (HP/LH)

Der Szintillator enthaelt einen Szintillationskristall und einen Detektor fuer die im Kristall durch Roentgen- oder γ-Strahlung erzeugten Lichtblitze. Der Kristall besteht aus einem mit Thallium dotierten Alkalihalogenid, wie Natriumjodit oder Caesiumjodit. Das Thallium dient zur Verbesserung des Wirkungsgrades des Kristalls fuer die Wellenumsetzung in das sichtbare Spektrum. Zur Herabsetzung des Anteils der gleichzeitig auftretenden und stoerenden Phosphoreszenzstrahlung wird der Thalliumgehalt des Kristalls zwischen 25 und 200 ppm des Alkalihalogenides gehalten. Der Szintillator kann in Roentgenstrahlen-Diagnostikgeraeten eingesetzt werden, in denen Querschnittsebenen von Patienten aufgenommen werden. Der Detektor ist hierbei in verschiedene Stellungen zu dem Patienten zu bringen. (HP)Files
